Details of Mervyn Street

About

Mervyn was born at Louisa Downs Station, 130kms west of Halls Creek. His mother, Penny Mudeling was a cook at the station and his father a stockman.
He now lives at Girriyoowa with his partner June Davis, son Fabian and grandson Howard.
Mervyn has taught Gooniyandi language studies at Yiyili Aboriginal Community School for a number of years. He is very influential among local groups and has a particular interest in Aboriginal Land Council issues. Mervyn is currently a member of the Yiyili School Board.
Mervyn is well known throughout the Kimberley for his contribution to art, particularly as it pertains to the expression of Gooniyandi culture. His work has been exhibited within Australia and England. Mervyn has been the tutor for painting workshops during the 1999 art project funded by the aboriginal and torres strait islander arts board for the Australia Council, "Painting - A way of Life". He has exhibited in three major Laarri Gallery exhibitions and art projects.
Mervyn was a major contributor of stories and paintings to the illustrated non-fiction childrens book , "Know you Granny", published by Yiyili Aboriginal Community.
