Details of Mark Anderson

About

Mark Anderson is one of the most knowledgeable senoir men in Spinifex Country of the Western Desert in WA. Like all the spinifex people Mark Anderson was given his English name by the missionaries of Cundeelee in the 1950's when he walked in from the desert further to the east.
Mark was already an initiated man in his twenties when he encountered white people for the first time. He spent the next twenty years between the mission and his homelands in Spinifex country to which he had and still has ritual obligations.

In the early 80's when the mission was to be shifted Mark Anderson along with a group of other elders led a move back into spinifex country. The site of Tjuntjuntjara, a soak area was chosen by Mark. It is now where the majority of Spinifex People reside. Mark has been painting with the Spinifex Arts Project since its beginning in 1997. Mark's work has been exhibited widely around Australia as well as London, Zurich and the Netherlands. He has work in many private collections and some public institutions.
