Details of Ian Abdulla

About

Ian Abdulla was born in 1947 in Swan Reach, South Australia. His father Jim Abdulla was part Afghan, born in Hawker, South Australia and his mother Jemima was a Ngarrindjeri woman from Raukkan (Point McLeay). He is one of seven brothers and five sisters. He lived with his family at Winkie and later at Cobdogla. Then after 10 years on the Gerard Mission, near Winkie in the South Australian Riverland, Ian went to Adelaide for two years where he worked for Community Welfare as a builders labourer. He then returned to Riverland with the Parks and Wildlife Service. His art career began in 1988 when he attended a silk-screen printing course at the Jerry Mason Senior Memorial Centre at Glossop. He started painting in 1989. Ian paints stories from his life along the River Murray and all the places he has spent time in around Australia. Ian is a finalist in this year's 27th National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. He has been a finalist in the award 12 times.
