About Newry Country
This painting shows an area of the artist's traditional country near the Keep River east of Kununurra. In the top left is a freshwater spring called Binjin (Bucket Springs); a lot of turtle and perch live and breed here. The yellow lines represent creeks and rivers. At the centre of the painting, the blue area is a mountain called Marnyarrny. The creek meets the mountain at a freshwater spring surrounded by a pile of rocks. The rocks represent all the birds that landed here in the Dreamtime. Around the smaller hill, the yellow circles represent the billabongs called Garmarrgingyarring and Moorloorr. The Keep River flows diagonally across the bottom of the painting. Below the river is a hill called Jarnam and beside it is the Police Hole community, Nyarwarnyawam. In the bottom right, the blue circles represent two large rocks called Nyarnalarm (white cockatoo dreaming).Painted in 2003.
