About Mamatu
This painting centres on the rockhole at Mamaduu known to all Spinifex people as a 'big place'. More than one major Spinifex Tjukurpa (story) passes through this place although only that associated with an especially powerful Mamu (evil spirit) is spoken about publicly. Mr Anderson passes across this story and links Mamaduu to toher places and stories within the surrounding area that are shown in this work; Mintolkarra, Muyuu, Kurlii, Ilkurlka, Warnguu, Wandirri, Wanarbii, Tjawarr, Tjata, Kurr Kurr, Tarantjara, Ukatajara, Panpara, Waljibii, Karnuu and Piltjitjaa. Mark Anderson is a very senior Spinifex man who was chairman of the corporation at Tjuntjuntjara community for 12 years and who actually signed the final Native Title Agreement with the WA State Premier.
