About Everysomewherever - Series 12
These little paintings created in Brisbane, Melbourne, Argentina and Broome feed off my many years of wanderlust. Constructed from 25 years, during this period I have somehow visited over 60 countries on all continents usually not staying in one place longer than three months. This intense nomadic lifestyle caused me on many mornings to wake up and wonder what city or even what country I am in.
If familiarirty and time are required to make space a place as the geographer Yi Fu Tuan states then my rapid movement across massive chunks of geography lands me permanently in space. Not a bad location for a landscape abstractionist as each little painting operates as a unique space. Landscape painting is a visual space where the relationship to actual topograpghy is fluid and cerebal. In this de-territorialized space I spend a lot of time.
These spaces or works of art are all gleaned from experiences on the road or sea with deliberate chaos and confusion in the work. i mix shapes seen in Portuguese ruins situated in Macau with colours from Mongolian flags or views of Antarctica with Persian miniatures. Tiys, rotten teeth, rainbows, reindeer antlers and an Egyptian mummy pillow all find themselves abruptly relocated without reason. Things are uprooted in order to mix visually with elements replanted from somewhere else. The only rule is that all must sit happily together in the space of each painting.
Everywhere, somewhere, or wherever holiday together in these tiny detours. Stars and beastys meander through the work to create small souvenirs from everysomewherever.
