About Ilyara

This painting shows country near Punmu in the Great Sandy Desert in W.A.

Daniel says "Ilyara is where my father was born. Winpa himself travelled through this place. Two different stories travelled through this country. Seven sisters one side, Winpa one side. Ilyara is a sacred place where people used to camp,to set up for a while. The white areas show the salt water lakes surrounding the jila (living water hole). The seven sisters who passed through here camped a night and sang and danced then left in the morning. They were being chased by a man who wanted to marry them so they kept on the move. These sisters are depicted in the constellation Peliades. That constellation is also my grandfather, Meridoo's father's dreaming."
