About Mantaratjara
Ian Rictor was one of the last people to leave a fully traditional life in the Great Victoria Desert when his relatives from Tjuntjutjara came to find him and his family some way north of Ilkurlka. After the wider family groups left the desert from the 1950s onwards Ians family chose to stay and look after the country.
In this painting Ian shows his homeland area centering around Mantaratjara, a place which he still visits. This place is near Kamanti, sandhill country with many trees and bushes around and Ian refers to it as a 'big place', meaning full of Tjukurpa (story). The trees are represented by the green colour in the painting.
Also noted here are the other rockholes of Kura Kura, Angili, Alyurlu, Katatjara, Minyutjara, Palka Palka, Kapi Weiatjara, Wata Kutjara and Pulitja
