Donald has painted the country where he grew up. Kardal is located near Punmu in the Great Sandy Desert and was home to some of the Yulparija people. The landscape is richly populated with jila (waterholes) which lie between the many tali (sand dunes) and warla (mud flats). His work is an aerial view of his ancestral land and it's accurate representation allows the painting to double as a map of the country. Donald stresses the danger of this land, saying that his people had to be careful not to go too close to the warla because many people have disappeared into the ground here.
