About Basketpa Rituwana Maru Tukurla - dark red rockhole basket
Basket Rituwana Maru Tukurla (Dark Red Rockhole Basket)

Raffia, grass and emu feathers

Pantjiti is a vivacious woman whose weaving reflects her bold character. This Rockhole Basket is typical of her rich colourful style.

She is a highly entreprenuerial woman, and a strong leader, heavily involved in many inma/traditional song and dance activities. Pantjiti is a great teacher, to Anangu and Piranpa/white people alike, of multiple aspects of Anangu Pitjantjatjara culture.

Anangu women of the Central and Western Desert have for a very long time worked with natural fibres to create items such as bush sandals (wipiya tjina), feather pouches (yakulta), hair string skirts (mowillari), and head-rings (manguri) for daily and ceremonial use. Adding a contemporary spin to the traditional, women now create baskets, vessels and as astonishing array of vibrant sculptures from locally collected desert grasses bound with string, wool or raffia and often incorporating feathers, seeds and found materials.
