About Ilbili
Gerome paints his country of Ilbili in this painting, the place at which he was born and spent time as a young boy. Ibili is next to Miramiratjara an important cultural place in Spinifex country known for its permanent underground water supply. Ilibi shares some of the same power and geography as Miramiratjara. Gerome says that under the ground many liru (snakes) guard the water supply. This place is also typified by large wanari (mulga trees) and is extrememly hot at the height of summer. Like most Spinifex people Gerome is extremely proud of his country.
