About Kangaroo Dreaming
Churchill maps country when he paints. From an aerial perspective, he describes the land in the painting. This country is east of Warmun, around Texas Downs station - where Churchill worked for many years as a stockman. The yellow part of the painting is a yard on the Purnululu side of Texas Downs Station. The Ord river is up north side of the station, past the yellow section. The red part of the painting is the hill on the station. The brown section is down the river, around the limestone parts. The pink section is east, where there is a big hill. In the Ngarrangnarni (Dreaming) a man came right through the Ord river and got stuck in the middle. He turned into a big black rock. He is still there today. That is now the kangaroo dreaming area, where the stealing bird comes and collects things for his nest (bower bird).
