Josephine Napurrula Australian, Pintupi, b. 1951

Josephine was born in the bush, near to Tjukurla. She is the daughter of Kulata (Kuliti) Tjakamarra, who was from Payarrnganya and Kuruyultu, near Tjukurla, and his wife Mayaru, whowas from Walungurru (Kintore).Josephine began painting with the other Napurrulas in the painting camps at Haasts Bluff run bythe Papunya Tula company in the late 1990s. This was the first generation of female artists to paint in the Western Desert.Her works are containers of power, imbued with strong cultural knowledge.
