Felicity learnt this design from her grandmother. The design is her grandmother's uehorero (her own wisdom). Felicity tells how her grandfather caught a small freshwater fish from the river: Her grandmother was looking at the fish's gills and was inspired to paint this design onto Nioge (bark cloth). The zig-zagging lines are a design called taigu'e which are traditional soru'e (tattoo designs). The lines that run through the work are known as orriseege or 'pathways' and provide a compositional framework for the design.
