There are a number of marsupials found in Western Arnhem Land that are hunted by Kunwinjku people.
Wolerrk is the female euro or wallaroo (Macropus robustus). Kalkberd is the term for a male euro. The Kunwinjku language often uses different words for male and female macropods, and animals are always shown as male or female in paintings.
The animal is often painted in the “x-ray” style with internal organs shown. This is a hallmark of western Arnhem Land painting in the rock art tradition, and indicates that the animal is an important food source.
