In the dry season it gets so hot and sticky and it starts to bring flies and dust and the long grass. When it gets so hot and hot and hot, the old people used to go to the cave where the Wandjina lived and ask him to bring rain. He used to ask the Wunggurr (rainbow serpent) to help. The Wunggurr would come from where he was sleeping underwater, in the salt water and hear the Wandjina calling. He’d come rushing with all the strength of the sea and the Wandjina tells him to bring the rain because it is so hot. The Wandjina travelled around the coast carrying the clouds and finally there is a storm, where the wind blows and the air gets cold and it rains. All the long grass falls over.
This painting depicts the reflection of the Wandjina in the still fresh water. It gets calm and makes you feel happy inside and makes you forget about bad things. All the things surrounding the Wandjina are the rocks near the stream. All the pebbles in the stream glow and shine. There are big ones, small ones and long ones.
