This painting was created once I had recovered from a period of chronic illness that went undiagnosed for 6 months. It was the first time I could clearly see that I was using my creative process to figure out a deeply unsettling time. The illness I have is Lupus and as it took hold of my body I lost the ability to move, there was a lot of pain. This experience threw into stark reality the separation between my physical self and the spirit or essence of self that I identify as me. In this reflection, the bird became the symbol of my spirit and triangle structures were the symbol of the physical world. This particular painting is a contemplation of the spirit being free of physical constraints. It was part of a series of works that celebrated the joy of regaining my health but also the new found gratitude of recovery and the knowledge that I had gained from the experience.
