'Old days (left) Old Village on Maryvale Station. All in humpies - candle light. No electricity. No water then, no toilet, no power, nothing. It was really hard. They were. Always carrying water from the bore, really long way. It would take all day. It was a really hard time. Go out look for firewood from all around. No car - we only had camel. We had to go collect mail and supplies from Rodinga Siding for station all the time. But only had camel. Station had car, but we still did that work. It was really hot. Every afternoon dust storm would come. People sitting in the humpies, drinking tea, soup. Crows hanging round camp look for food.
New days, new houses built (right). We had power. Normal day, people walking around and talk with people, telling story. Lots of noise, chatter, and all the papa [dogs] and tjitji [kids] playing round. All the cars cruising round. Pension day, everyone come in from Outstations all round. Some want to go to creek for picnic, some might be don't want to. Tjitji might be play marbles, something like that. Clinic still small tin shed, not modern clinic. People come in to store to buy food. That's all in my mind now.'
Titjikala is a remote Indigenous community 130 km south of Alice Springs where Doris lived for many years before moving to Alice Springs for health reasons.
