Collaborative Piece by Emma Singer and Betty Campbell
“We worked on this canvas together, but Emma led the painting,” says Betty. “I sat alongside her, watching and making sure the story was right. She’s finding her voice and learning the responsibility that comes with it.”
The work brings together the kapi tjukula and soakages above and below ground that connect Mimiliand Iwantja. “I was thinking about the women who came before us,” Emma says, “how they walked between these places, sang the songs, dug for water. I wanted to paint those paths and keep their knowledge alive.”
In this way, the canvas holds both Emma’s emerging authority and Betty’s guidance, layers of story and teaching woven together in paint.
