Byron Brookes inhales his own history spent traversing the labyrinth of Spinifex Country and exhales light infused, intimate depictions of a landscape brimming with meaning. In this painting, he transposes the Minyma Tjuta Tjukurpa (Seven Sisters Creation Line) from the significant site of Tjintikara, close to where Byron was born. This is an epic narrative that follows a group of young women as the journey across the Spinifex Lands evading the constant pursuit of a lustful older man (Wati Nyiru) who wishes the elder sister as his wife. Nyiru has the powers of transformation and is always trying to trick the women into his grasp. These characters that Byron depicts are the first beings. The ones who shaped not only themselves but the very landscape they moved through, leaving a mapped environment for all people to follow.
