Matthew is an abstract painter influenced by light and the atmosphere of the natural environment, especially the relationship to where water meets other elements that is, shorelines, sky, horizon, clouds. He says, "many of these observations become the subject matter of my paintings….and it is the constant observation of nature that informs my visual language".
