SPINIFEX 2025: New works from the Spinifex Arts Project

29 August - 25 September 2025
Spinifex 2025 showcases the rich cultural heritage and artistic expression of the Spinifex people, whose ancestral lands lie in Tjuntjuntjara in the remote southeast of Western Australia, deep in the Great Victorian Desert. This powerful landscape pervades and defines the artists paintings from this region, as the artists map their physical environment and recreate the stories that formed it. Central to the Spinifex art practice is the interpretation of Tjukurpa, (creation stories), which are foundational narratives that convey the history, laws, and spiritual beliefs integral to the Spinifex people. Artists affiliated with Spinifex create powerful paintings that not only depict these stories but also reflect their connection to country—an intricate relationship forged over millennia.

The Spinifex artists use paint to bring to life, sand hills, salt lakes, plains, and rocky escarpments, rendered and woven into the history, ceremony, and iconography of the Tjuntjuntjara. As an integral part of the Western Desert movement the Spinifex artists formative paintings recorded over 500 scared sites and stories that lead to the granting of a Determination of Native title and the return of the Anangu to their lands. They are recognised unanimously as exceptional, appearing in major institutions in Australian and abroad.

Short St Gallery invites you to take a walk through Tjuntjuntjara country in Spinifex 2025, a land characterised by distinctive patterns and vibrant colours, serving as both aesthetic statements and profound cultural artefacts that contribute to a broader understanding of Aboriginal identity and resilience in contemporary Australian society.
