Janet Forbes - Wati Kutjarra: With Artworks from Blackstone
Forthcoming exhibition
Short St Gallery is honoured to present a notable body of work from Janet Nyunmitji Forbes in Wati Kutjarra. Janet is supported by other significant artists whose compelling artwork is also forged in the remote Western Desert region surrounding Blackstone in Western Australia.
Rooted in Janet's Ngaanyatjarra heritage, her work draws deeply on ancestral stories and the rich tapestry of her people’s cultural life. Her recent body of work portrays the Tjukurrpa (dreaming) narrative of the Wati Kutjarra (Two Goanna Men). Janet weaves this story together with a vibrant display of line and colour on canvas. Forbes' journey as an artist began in 2003 and her paintings reflect a lived connection to Country, family, and the ancient stories of her homelands. Her storytelling and art practice have a warmth and a strength of line that resonates in every piece she creates, embodying both tradition and personal expression.
Janet's art has reached audiences far beyond Blackstone, featuring in major group exhibitions and held in significant collections such as the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Janet is joined in exhibition by friends and contemporaries at Blackstone including, Mildred Lyons, Maureen Douglas, and Nora Davidson. We invite you to view Janet Forbes - Wati Kutjarra via the gallery or online. A catalogue can be obtained through enquiries@shortstgallery.com.
