PULIRRI (GRANDDAUGHTER): Serena Ken, Maryanne Ken, Tanya Burton & Amy Scotty
Forthcoming exhibition
Short St Gallery presents Pulirri (Granddaughter), featuring a new generation of artists who are gaining attention for the way they honour and extend powerful family legacies and blend inherited visual languages with their own contemporary voices. Serena Ken, Maryanne Ken, Tanya Burton and Amy Scotty are the daughters and granddaughters of long celebrated artists who draw deeply from their family’s ground breaking approach to colour, movement, and connection to Country.
Serena and Maryanne reinterpret generational visual language through their own experiences and practice. Their works echo the same pulsating fields of colour and intricate mark-making but with subtle shifts in palette and composition, that signal a continuation rather than imitation, demonstrating how cultural knowledge is both preserved and renewed across generations. Similarly, Tanya Burton and Amy Scotty are a new generation of artists whose practices are shaped by strong familial and community ties to established artists through symbolic patterning and layered narratives.
Pulirri (Granddaughter) is a continuation of tradition in the use of repeated motifs, palettes and an emphasis on storytelling grounded in Country but it brings with it a fresh perspective, experimenting with scale, texture, and individual expression within the visual and cultural frameworks passed down to each artist. Short St Gallery is proud to present the next generation and we invite you to view Pulirri (Grandaughter) via the gallery or online. A catalogue can be obtained through enquiries@shortstgallery.com.
