Joyce has painted bis'e, a very old Sahuote clan emblem that represents a fern leaf. When a Sahuote clanperson is departing from their village they must place a fern leaf at the junction of the road as a sign to let other clan members know they have gone. The fern leaf is broken in a way that indicates which direction they are travelling.
