The border as well as the line that runs through the centre of the work are orriseege or 'pathways' and provide a compositional framework for the design. The design is misai, the kisaje clan emblem of the river plant. When Martha-Jean married her husband and became a part of his clan she was taught their clan-emblem by her mother-in-law. The rectangles and lines that can be seen between the misai are Marth-Jean's uehorero, her own wisdom.
