ARTIST SPOTLIGHT : SONIA KURARRA: ARTWORKS FROM THE BUNGALOW

The late great Kimberley artist, Sonia Kurarra, was born on the banks of the Martuwarra (Fitzroy River) in Noonkoonbah. She began painting in the early 1990’s and grew an extraordinary art practice over many years, emerging as an important and contemporary art maker. Her art practice was layered with marks that intertwined stories drawn directly from the riverbanks and billabongs of her country. The energy embedded in her artwork contrasts with the dreamlike aesthetic of her paintings. Each painting equal parts colour, gesture, conscious intention and unconscious emotion, the resulting paintings are a mediation on the transcendent.

Sonia Kurarra's art practice mapped the pulse of the river system and environment she continuously painted and venerated for over 30 years of her life. Short St Gallery is honoured to invite you to join us in celebrating this extraordinary artist by viewing Ms Kurarra's artworks from our collection below.
