COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT : MANGKAJA: ARTWORKS FROM THE BUNGALOW

Fitzroy Crossing is fresh water country, sitting between the river and the desert in Western Australia far north. The artists from this region have a unique position in the Kimberley both culturally and environmentally. They have a shared land, history and culture however the diversity of the creative community is unique. Elder's who have been painting country and culture for 30 years sit side by side with young creatives who are exploring contemporary art practices in new and exciting ways. The result is an exciting mix of traditional culture, portraits of station life, a strong connection to colour, uninhibited style and innovative personal stories. The art community continue to pioneer innovative exhibitions and collaborations such as Mervyn Street's recent and powerful Stolen Wages showcase.

Short St Gallery is proud to have supported artists from Mangkaja since its inception in the early 1990’s. The strong visual culture developed in Fitzroy Crossing has supported a large number of important artists who have contributed to Australian Art and the success of the Australian Aboriginal Art movement.
