COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT - MARTU: ARTWORKS FROM THE BUNGALOW
Current viewing_room
The artworks that emerge from Martu artists, working throughout the Pilbara and centred in Newman, are deeply rooted in Country and Story. Martu art reflects the ancient landscapes, water-sources, and seasonal rhythms of the artists homelands. Senior artists like Bugai Whyoulter are widely regarded for their expressive, gestural canvases that map out personal and communal narratives of place. Martu artworks have featured in major group exhibitions including, the National Museum of Australia, alongside international exhibitions. Martu artworks continue to be acquired by major public collections and celebrated through regular exhibitions that commemorate their contemporary role as custodians of artistic and cultural knowledge.
Another celebrated Martu figure, the late Billy Yunkurra Atkins (d. 2021), made a lasting impact with his distinctive, narrative-rich imagery that blends Western twentieth-century styles with traditional Jukurrpa themes. His artworks alongside his Martu contemporaries, have been selected for prestigious platforms like The Material Art Fair in Mexico City in 2024. Martu artists continue to highlight their enduring cultural resilience and the global reach of their visual storytelling. We invite you to view recently arrived artworks from the region below.
