Short St Gallery invites you to view a selection of recently arrived and compelling small to mid sized artworks by Venetta Yanawana. Venetta is an emerging voice in contemporary Australian art whose practice is deeply grounded in her Mangala heritage and connection to Country. Her paintings translate the landscapes of Nyangumarta Warran into vibrant, layered compositions that map memory, movement, and ancestral presence. Through rhythmic mark-making and a confident use of colour, her works carry both a striking visual impact and a powerful cultural narrative that continues to resonate strongly within the industry.
Yanawana’s profile has been steadily rising, with recent exhibitions including Old People Lived Here at Art Collective WA, as well as showcases such as Desert Meets the Seaside and inclusion in several art awards. Venetta is inspired by the art practice of her well known family, with growing attention on her defined style and storytelling approach. Her work often has a distinct Kimberley feel, representing Country as it changes from dry to wet season, as Venetta says of a recent work, 'This is Nyangumarta Warran, this is after the wet season, from the red desert sand to the salty plains of Walyarta'.
