SPOTLIGHT ON WORKS ON PAPER: FROM THE SHORT ST COLLECTION

10 - 31 March 2021

Short St Gallery presents an exciting collection of works on paper including paintings, drawings, limited edition prints and mixed media. Invented in China in the 2nd century, paper began being used extensively in Europe in the 15th century. With its invention, artists began using paper to create prints as well as create original works that explored ideas, materials, space, shape and colour. Most paper can be transported and handled easily making it an ideal medium for artists in remote areas or who travel frequently. Often drying quicker, the nature of paper grants materials such as ink, paint and watercolours to be absorbed in distinctive ways, allowing for beautiful depths of colour and veneer. For artists, the freedom and immediacy of paper provides a medium that can inspire new techniques, aesthetics, subjects or methodologies.

From an art buyer’s perspective drawings often provide an accessible point of entry into the art market. Limited-edition prints and the frequently smaller size of works on paper can allow collectors access to a leading artist that might otherwise be unaffordable in another medium. The works on paper in today's collection explore an inventive fusion of materials and techniques, such as Shaun Namarnyilk's drawing with ochre over paper soaked in natural material; or Alison Anderson’s chalk drawings; and the Mangkaja artist's bold use of acrylic paint. This important and accessible mode of art making has a texture and intimate nature that links us to the idea that working on paper can provide an insight into how artists think and communicate. Short St Gallery invites you to view this wonderful selection of artworks below.
