COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Tjukurla

Based in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands of Western Australia, Tjukurla has strong family ties to the Papunya art movement with many families leaving Kintore and Kiwirrkurra to return to Tjukurla in the 1980’s. The community art centre was established in 2006 and named Tjarlirli. Their focus is on preserving and promoting the artwork and culture of the Ngaanyatjarra people by supporting their art practice. The centre acts as the primary business venture in Tjukurla, providing an important source of income and employment in the community and providing opportunities for training, development, and industry participation.

With close family ties in the neighbouring community of Kaltukatjara (in the Pitjantjatjara lands in the Northern Territory), the art centre extended to support the artists here, naming their second art centre, Kaltukatjara Art. The cultural significance of the work from this region has been recognised by leading institutions and discerning buyers, with artworks from the two communities finding their way into major exhibitions and collections within Australia and abroad. Today’s Community Spotlight highlights the incredible talent of Ngaanyatjarra artists such as, Katjara Butler, Mrs T James, Bob Gibson and their fellow contemporaries. We invite you to view the collection via the link below and are offering free domestic shipping on purchases from Tjukurla sent rolled, until May 30th 2022.
