SPOTLIGHT : WARAKURNA WOMEN: NEW WORKS FROM THE STOCKROOM

Established in 2005 in the Ngaanyatjara Lands of Western Australia, the heart of the Gibson Desert, Warakurna's art studio runs a number of programs including a weekly painting program out of Wanarn Aged Care and an outreach painting program based in the remote out station of Patjarr. The studio enables the artists to continue to paint on Country and share Tjukurpa (traditional culture and law) through art. With expressive brushstrokes, the artists document the histories of Ngaanyatjarra culture; their paintings are topographical maps and records of the Song Lines embedded in the landscape itself.

The art of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands distinct aesthetic uses circles, dots and lines to create compositions which are unique in their form, with the artists showcasing a mark-making that signifies a confident, intuitive knowledge of Country. The women of Warakurna's latest artworks are intricate and vibrant, utilising a palette of desert and dusk hues which provide a window into their respective Tjukurpa's. Short St Gallery is honoured to present these beautiful works through our stockroom. We are offering a 10% discount on multiple purchases from Warakurna until 30 June, 2022.
