SPOTLIGHT ON KUNWINJKU WEAVERS: Collectable fibre works from Arnhem Land

Vivid colour and innovative weaving techniques are the hall mark of the Injalak weavers. Located in Gunbalanya in eastern Arnhem Lands, the Kunwinjku women draw their inspiration from traditional techniques, making these artworks the embodiment of Australian history. The weaver’s source young leaves from the pandanus palm which are then boiled in the campfire using 100% local plant dyes. Weavings were traditionally a valuable item used as, a working surface, clothing and during ceremonies.

The Kunwinjku artist’s inherent eye for the unusual and the beautiful enable them to experiment with new forms, adapting the materials to produce some extraordinary statement sculptures at an astonishing scale. Short St Gallery is honoured to present these outstanding woven artworks, from Marebu’s (woven mats) to sculptural animals, that are rarely seen on such a scale outside of major exhibitions and awards.
