ARTIST SPOTLIGHT : RENE SUNDOWN & EMILY CULLINAN: ARTWORKS FROM THE BUNGALOW
Current viewing_room
Emily Cullinan was born on Anangu land in South Australia and lived a traditional Anangu existence; travelling consistently, hunting and collecting bush food along the way and having little contact with non-Indigenous people. Emily has continued to pass on to her family the traditional knowledge of hunting, bush foods and water sources that she learnt from her own parents as a young girl. These days, Emily is a respected senior woman and an established artist, her dynamic and powerful paintings are inspired by memories of her childhood, living traditionally on country with her parents, and the many journeys they undertook.
Rene Sundown was born near Mt Ebenezer in the Northern Territory and raised in the bushland there. Rene and now lives at Amaroona, a homeland near the Indulkana Community, where she manages the land and maintains Anangu cultural practices like cultivating bush foods and crafts. Rene is also a respected senior woman and a long-serving director of the community Art Centre. She paints the country where she lives, Amaroona. Her incredible artworks utilise a pared-back palette and subtle shifts in colour to depict sites of cultural significance and important rock-holes and water-sources.
