SPOTLIGHT ON : HERMANNSBURG STYLE: ARTWORKS FROM THE BUNGALOW

The Hermannsburg School style of watercolour painting is one of Australia’s most renown art movements. Pioneered in the 1930’s by the iconic artist Albert Namatjira, the style went on to establish a legacy and tradition for the Western Arrernte people of Central Australia that continues today. The Hermannsburg style is primarily watercolour-based landscape paintings. While Indigenous spirituality and culture is intrinsically linked to landscape.
The Hermannsburg style of painting shares an awareness of country unique to the Western Arrernte culture and heritage, setting the work apart and lending the artworks a character of its own that can be seen and felt when viewing these beautiful works.

The Hermannsburg style has been passed down through generations of Alberts relatives who continue the art form; creating a living history, art movement and art centre. The art centre, ManyHands, is located in Alice Springs and is home of the Namatjira watercolour artists, supporting their continued art practice and superbly created art works. Short St Gallery invites you to view a selection of beautiful watercolours and prints that continue the Hermannsburg style.
