COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT : Kalka & Pipalyatjara: Artworks from the Bungalow

The art studio in Kalka Community was founded in 2006 in a mud brick building by a small group of Pitjantjatjara and Ngaanyatjarra artists. Since then, the studio has expanded to support around forty artists and makers who live in both Kalka and Pipalyatjara, two of the most remote communities of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. Over the course of the last 17 years the artists have exhibited their work nationally and internationally, creating waves with their bold designs and innovative use of colour. Artists such as Samuel Miller, Cassaria Hogan Young, Carol Young and Anyupa Nelson amongst others have become known for their powerful colour palettes, and broad diversity of styles in which the artists tell traditional stories of country and everyday life in community.

While the origins of the Kalka and Pipalyatjara art practice lays in the traditions of Western Desert dot painting, overtime the artists have incorporated loose brush techniques as well as new mediums, especially the innovative use of kalawatjanga (glass) into their art practices. the results are spectacular paintings full of life and joy.
