SPOTLIGHT ON PEARLSHELL: Artworks from the Bungalow
Current viewing_room
In the Kimberley region on the far north-west coast of Western Australia the lustrous engraved shell of the pearl oyster is a complex and codified object. It is embedded in a long history of movement and systems of exchange along extensive trade routes across our continent. Known as riji and jakuli in the Bardi Jawi languages, the saltwater tribes of the Kimberley carve hypnotic zigzags, mazes, and geometric motifs into the iridescent shell, then infilled with deep red and yellow ochre pigments. The pearl shell is associated with water and magic, and the silvery, scintillating radiance of the shells surface embodies the shimmering qualities of water, rain, and the flash of lightning.
Sebastian Arrow and Robert Wiggan both hail from the Kimberley region and are custodians of the tradition of pearl shell carving, producing extraordinary artworks with traditional local law designs. The interlocking designs etched into the surface move with the shape of the shell, creating the subtle movement that is distinctive of riji. The carvings tell stories old and new about each artists country, continuing a rich tradition unique to the Kimberley of storytelling and recording culture.
