Harold Munkara Tiwi, Australia, b. 1967
Harold started carving in 1985 when he finished school, learning how to carve Tiwi style and paint from his uncles and grandparents.
A highly experienced carver Harold is renowned for his spears and elegant pelicans and birds carved from locally sourced ironwood and painted with local ochres.
He learnt about collecting ochre from his country Jikilaruwu [Cape Forcroy], the primary ochre collecting site on Bathurst Island. Through carving Harold maintains his connection to Tiwi culture and keeps culture strong.
Harold has exhibited widely while working with Tiwi Design and his work is in many private collections.
In early 2025 Harold joined the Ngaruwanajirri carvers where he has had great success with his lovely birds in particular alikampwarni [pelican] and jilarti [jabiru] carvings.
