Romeo James Ullungura Tiwi, Australian, b. 1983

Romeo has been carving ironwood with the Ngaruwanajirri group since the mid 2000’s. Subject matter of his carvings is most often tokwampini (birds) and tutini (pukumani poles). Since 2022 Romeo has been an arts worker at Ngaruwanajirri, learning all the skills for working in an Aboriginal art centre.

Romeo has worked in fish farming at Barra Base, Port Hurd Bathurst Island and the Forestry plantations on Melville Island. Romeo loves to carve the Tiwi way. Recently Romeo has been painting tunga (stringybark), a return to an ancient Tiwi tradition. Well known Tiwi artists Bede Tungatalum and Barry Kantilla have been role models for Romeo with his carving work.
