UNFOLDING: New works from Betty Campbell, Betty Mula, Emma Singer & Tanya Umatji Tjapalyi

26 May - 22 June 2023

Short St Gallery presents, Unfolding an exhibition from four expanding artists from the community of Mimili of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands in the north west of South Australia. This exhibition celebrates the depth of talent from rising stars; Betty Campbell, Betty Mula, Emma Singer and Tanya Umatji Tjapalyi.

The mesmerising paintings by Betty Campbell develop the storylines and inam (song and dance) of women’s stories that cannot be spoken aloud.
While Betty Mula uses the language of paint to reflect on the movements and change in seasons, as she unfolds the landscape onto the canvas.
Emma Singer works with a visual language that has been passed onto her from her ancestors, where she explores the connection to manta (country) and spirit. Emma says of her work, ‘It's like my country's own language that I'm sharing in my painting’.
While the ephemeral painting's developed by Umatji depict the country around Iltur, which forms part of the Antara storyline; often celebrated in Women’s Ceremony. Umatji says of her art practice, ‘I was watching for a long time, watching country, watching my mother paint. Now I am ready to tell my own story’.

Unfolding
celebrates the emergence of these four artists and their exploration of their cultural narratives, landscapes and ideas.
