TJUTA - DESERT STORIES: ARTWORKS FROM TJUNTJUNTJARA

Short St Gallery is proud to present Tjuta – Desert Stories, an exhibition celebrating the extraordinary art and enduring cultural strength of the Spinifex Arts Project. Featuring works by artists from the Tjuntjuntjara community including significant paintings by Ian Rictor, Lennard Walker and Michelle Anderson, the exhibition offers an intimate encounter with Country, Tjukurpa and the stories that continue to connect generations.

Spinifex paintings carry a particular gravity - they are not simply depictions of desert landscapes, but expressions of identity, cultural knowledge, ancestral stories and enduring relationships to Country. Tjuntjuntjara lies deep within the Great Victoria Desert of Western Australia, near the South Australian border and on the traditional lands of the Pila Nguru (Spinifex People). The Spinifex Arts Project began in the 1990s alongside the Spinifex People's Native Title process, with painting becoming a powerful way to document and communicate their connection to their ancestral lands. The Spinifex People's successful Native Title determination in 2000 recognised their connection to more than 55,000 square kilometres of Country, and the studio continues to play a vital role in carrying that knowledge forward.

Tjuta – Desert Stories invites audiences to look beyond the surface of these remarkable works and encounter the living stories, histories and cultural authority that is being actively handed down to Tjuntjuntjara's emerging generation of artists and cultural leaders.
